introduction.

Now having done a full year of composition at WAAPA as well as a jam packed calendar of extra-curricular activities and opportunities, I genuinely feel my composition is the strongest it’s ever been. This year I took part in 3 musicals both professional and amateur, and I feel like those opportunities to do really in-depth deep dives into full bodies of musical theatre works reflects in my own music theatre writing today. In my semester 2 portfolio I am featuring three of my musical theatre songs from my ongoing personal project “The Crocodile”; these are entitled: “Look At Her", “Cider”, and “Wake Me When It’s Over”, all of which I am immensely proud of.

Apart from my music theatre writing, this semester has pushed me to engage with and compose music I wouldn’t usually gravitate towards, especially in the acousmatics units. Though initially a challenge, I feel I have successfully combined my own personal style with the acousmatics genre in my assignment submission entitled “Effervescence”. This is definitely the most experimental thing I’ve composed, but I’m especially pleased with how I navigated the DAW and fully understood and utilised features I didn’t before.

My general listening preferences and music taste this semester hasn’t straight to far from the usual (jazz standards, classic/modern theatre, classic rock, modern pop/rnb) but I feel that within these genres my taste is maturing and tapering towards really thoughtful work from seasoned artists, rather than some more common hap-hazard material with no real intention.

Overall, it’s been a very full year and I’m excited to have the feeling of a creative ball rolling with no intentions of stopping. Next year I’m hopeful for more people to hear my material (in particular my theatre works) and in years to come to start staging full shows in both workshop and production formats.
